Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia)

Artikel hasil penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami dan mendeskripsikan bentuk kekuasaan dan resistensi gereja Katolik yang ditelusuri melalui film Spotlight serta mengetahui dan menjelaskan kekuasaan dan resistensi tersebut merepresentasikan perlawananan pers terhadap dominasi gereja Katolik di Boston, Amerika Serikat. Dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif dan pendekatan semiotika dalam bingkai perspektif pascastrukturalis dan paradigma dekonstruksionisme, hasil penelitian tersebut mengungkapkan bahwa terdapat kekuasaan dan resistensi dalam film Spotlight yang direpresentasikan dari adanya dominasi gereja Katolik dan perlawanan yang dilakukan pers terhadap dominasi tersebut.  Lahirnya resistensi ini tak terlepas dari relasi antara kekuasaan dengan resistensi yang tak dapat dipisahkan, di mana ada kekuasaan di sana pula terdapat anti-kekuasaan atau resistensi.  Kekuasaan dalam konteks ini dimaknai secara halus dan luas yang tercermin dari kekuasaan dimaknai produktif hingga dapat melahirkan pengetahuan.  Lahirnya pengetahuan ini karena adanya ketimpangan kekuasaan, di mana terdapat posisi superior dan inferior.  Ketimpangan tersebut juga dapat terlihat dalam kehidupan beragama antara para pemuka agama dengan penganutnya hingga menimbulkan dominasi agama.  Terlebih, sistem indoktrinasi di dalam agama ini berusaha mengontrol pikiran yang membuat kekuasaan yang ada semakin besar dan absolut hingga melahirkan resistensi.  Hal tersebut merefleksikan bahwa film yang merupakan bagian dari kajian cultural studies bukan hanya sebagai media hiburan, tetapi juga dapat membongkar praktik kekuasaan, dominasi, ideologi melalui simbol atau tanda.

This research article aims to understand and describe the form of power and resistance of the Catholic church, which is traced through the film Spotlight, and to know and explain how this power and resistance represent the press' resistance to the domination of the Catholic church in Boston, United States of America. By using qualitative methods and semiotic approaches within the framework of poststructuralist perspectives and the deconstructionist paradigm, the results of this research reveal that there is power and resistance in the film Spotlight, which is represented by the dominance of the Catholic church and the resistance by the press against this dominance. The inception of this resistance is inseparable from the relationship between power and resistance, which cannot be separated; where there is power, there is also anti-power or resistance. Power in this context is interpreted in a subtle and broad sense, which is reflected in the meaning of "power," which is productive so that it can give inception to knowledge. The inception of this knowledge is due to an imbalance of power where there are superior and inferior positions. This inequality can also be seen in religious life between religious leaders and their adherents, causing religious dominance. Moreover, the system of indoctrination in this religion tries to control the mind, which makes the existing power bigger and more absolute, so that it creates resistance. This reflects the fact that film, which is part of the study of cultural studies, is not only a medium of entertainment but can also dismantle the practice of power, dominance, and ideology through symbols or signs.
