Penelitian berjudul “Noun Phrase Analysis on Horror Short Story Metzengerstein by Edgar Allan Poe” ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis unsur-unsur horror yang digambarkan oleh frasa nomina pada cerita pendek Metzengerstein. Unsur-unsur horor dibagi menjadi perasaan, monster mengerikan, dan struktur horor. Analisis ini dilakukan berdasarkan teori Noel Carroll Philosophy of Horror (1990), dan teori frasa nomina Quirk, et el. (1985). Metode kualitatif deskriptif digunakan dalam memecahkan rumusan masalah dan teknik purposive sampling digunakan dalam pengumpulan data. Data utama dari penelitian ini adalah seluruh frasa nomina yang menggambarkan unsur-unsur horor. Langkah-langkah yang dilakukan dalam pengumpulan data antara lain: (1) membaca seluruh cerita Metzengerstein, (2) mengidentifikasi frasa nomina yang menggambarkan unsur horor, dan (3) mengidentifikasi struktur horor. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan 44 frasa nomina ditemukan menggambarkan unsur-unsur horor. Data yang ditemukan antara lain 13 (29.5%) frasa nomina menggambarkan perasaan dan 31 (70.5%) menggambarkan monster mengerikan. Struktur frasa nomina dibagi menjadi empat bagian. Data yang ditemukan antara lain 4 (9.1%) pembukaan, 15 (34.1%) penemuan, 7 (15.9%) konfirmasi, dan 18 (40.9%) konfrontasi. Struktur frasa nomina dibagi menjadi tiga pola. Data yang ditemukan antara lain 5 (11.36%) frasa nomina dengan kata imbuhan depan, 16 (36.36%) frasa nomina dengan kata imbuhan belakang. Dan 23 (52.28%)  frasa nomina dengan kedua kata imbuhan. Setelah dilakukannya observasi, frasa nomina yang menggambarkan monster mengerikan adalah yang paling dominan. Hal ini dapat menunjukkan cara Poe menanamkan rasa takut pada pembaca cerita ini. Disisi lain, hasil dari analisis struktur horor menunjukan complex discovery plot digunakan dalam cerita ini. Hasil dari analisis struktur frasa nomina menunjukan frasa nomina dengan kedua kata imbuhan adalah yang paling dominan. Jumlah struktur frasa nomina ini menunjukan karakter Poe dalam memberikan detail lebih pada frasa nomina. Ringkasan dari hasil obervasi ini adalah struktur frasa nomina yang berbeda dapat memeengaruhi bagaimana unsur-unsur horor digambarkan dalam cerita.

This research entitled “Noun Phrase Analysis on Horror Short Story Metzengerstein by Edgar Allan Poe” aims to analyse the elements of horror depicted by the noun phrases in short story Metzengerstein. The elements of horror consist of emotion, horrific monster, and structure of horror. The analysis is conducted using the theory of Noel Carroll’s Philosophy of Horror (1990) to analyse the elements of horror and Quirk, et el. (1985) to analyse the noun phrases. The descriptive qualitative method is applied to solve the research questions and purposive sampling technique is used in this research to collect the data. The primary data are all the noun phrases depicting elements of horror. The steps of data collection the researcher takes are the following: (1) read the short story Metzengerstein, (2) Identify the noun phrases based on the elements of horror, and (3) identify the noun phrases by its structure. The result of the research shows there are 44 noun phrases depicting the elements of horror. There are 13 (29.5%) noun phrases depicting emotions and 31 (70.5%) noun phrases depicting horrific monsters. The structure of horror is categories into four parts. There are 4 (9.1%) of onset, 15 (34.1%) of discovery, 7 (15.9%) confirmation, and 18 (40.9%) of confrontation. The structure of noun phrases is divided into three patterns. There are 5 (11.36%) of noun phrases modified by pre-modifier, 16 (36.36%) of noun phrases modified by post-modifier, and 23 (52.28%) of noun phrases modified by both pre and post-modifier. After conducting observations, the noun phrases depicting the horrific monster are the most dominant. The use of horrific monster in the story indicates Poe’s way of instil fear into the reader. On the other hand, the result of structure of horror shows that the complex discovery plot is used in the story of Metzengerstein. The result of structure of noun phrases shows that noun phrases modified by both pre and post-modifier dominate the other patterns. The frequency of this pattern shows Poe’s character of giving more details to the noun phrases. In short, different structure of noun phrases can affect the way how elements of horror are depicted in the short story.
