FISH BIODIVERSITY IN PROTECTED AND UNPROTECTED SEAGRASS BEDS AT SAPARUA ISLAND, CENTRAL MOLUCCAS
Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia)
One of the marine habitats on which marine fish rely for living is seagrass. Seagrass beds serve as a nursery ground, which is one of its most essential purposes. In seagrass beds, the majority of the fish are juveniles or young adults. As they mature, they move to different ecosystems. The seagrass beds complexity provides living, foraging, shelter, and protection spaces, especially during their early stages. The Marine Protected Area (MPA) is a commonly utilized instrument for managing marine resources and protecting biodiversity, and it excels in terms of the number of species protected among the numerous possible actions. The quantity and abundance of species that are locally absent in some non-protected places, as well as the richness and evenness of species, may rise as a result of protection. The aims of the present study are to (1) determine seagrass fish diversity in both protected and un-protected areas in Eastern Saparua, (2) define seagrass fish species abundance in both protected and un-protected areas in Eastern Saparua, and (3) evaluate species distribution in each station of sampling areas. Within the period of October to December 2020, sampling was carried out in the eastern part of Saparua Island, Central Moluccas, using the purposive sampling techniques to observe 12 stations, six of which were in the protected area and six others in the un-protected area. PAST 4.0.3 was used to examine the data on fish diversity. while graphic by Microsoft excel was used to define abundance, and distribution species were conducted using Microsoft Excel before proceeding with descriptive analysis. And SPSS to prove the independent T-test. The study found that protected areas have a greater diversity of marine fish, with 38 species belonging to 29 families, compared to 18 species belonging to 15 families in un-protected areas. The protected area had the greatest taxa, individuals, and the diversity index whereas the un-protected area had the lowest. The total abundance of seagrass fishes in protected area was 1215 individuals and in un-protected area was 469 individuals. There are 38 species of fish that record in protected area, while all seagrass fish from non-protected areas were reported in protected areas, totaling 20 species; however, the reverse is not true. There are also 18 different species of seagrass fish that can be found in both protected and non-protected regions.
