Sistem ie merupakan suatu sistem keluarga dengan latar belakang patriarki yang dianut secara turun temurun oleh banyak keluarga di Jepang. Sistem ie menempatkan perempuan sebagai subordinat yang dibelenggu oleh skema patriarki domestik sehingga stigma yang melekat pada perempuan yang telah menikah hanyalah sebagai seorang istri dan ibu rumah tangga beserta pekerjaannya dalam ranah privat saja. Novel Taigan no Kanojo menghadirkan tokoh Sayoko Tamura, seorang wanita yang telah menikah dan berusaha melakukan proses negosiasi pada identitasnya sebagai ibu rumah tangga agar mereka tak melulu tunduk dalam sistem ie dan mampu mendapatkan pekerjaan kembali di ranah publik. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori klasifikasi patriarki milik Walby yang membagi patriarki menjadi patriarki domestik dan patriarki publik serta mengamati proses negosiasi identitas terhadap sistem ie berdasarkan asumsi teoretis milik Ting-Toomey sebagai indikasi keberhasilan suatu proses negosiasi identitas. Penelitian ini dikategorikan sebagai penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dengan analisis berupa pengamatan pada narasi maupun dialog dalam sumber data dan mengaitkannya dengan landasan teori yang digunakan. Fokus dalam penelitian ini adalah indikasi patriarki domestik beserta proses negosiasi identitas terhadap sistem ie yang dideskripsikan melalui data yang diperoleh. Pengarang menjabarkan bahwa proses tersebut tidaklah mudah karena sistem ie telah menjadi sebuah peraturan tak tertulis dan pedoman bagi keluarga Jepang sehingga individu yang mencoba mengubah kedudukannya terhadap sistem ie tak mendapatkan empati dan dukungan dari individu lain dan kelompok di sekitarnya.

Ie is a Japanese family system and popularly used as the traditional family structure. The system of ie places women as subordinates who are shackled by private patriarchy schemes so that the stigma attached to married women is only as a wife and their work in the private sphere as a housewife. Novel Taigan no Kanojo presents the character of Sayoko Tamura, a woman who is married and is trying to negotiate her identity as a housewife so women will not always submit to the ie system and can get a job in public after the marriage. This research uses Walby's patriarchal classification theory which divides patriarchy into private patriarchy and public patriarchy also observes the identity negotiation process against the ie system based on Ting-Toomey's theoretical assumptions as an indication of the progress of the identity negotiation process. This research is categorized as descriptive qualitative with analysis in the form of observations in narratives and dialogues based on the data then relates them within the theories on this research. The focus in this research is the indication of domestic patriarchy along with the identity negotiation process against the ie system which is described through the data obtained.Through the novel, the author explains the process of negotiation is not easy because the ie system has become a nonwritten rule and guideline for Japanese families so that individuals who try to change their position against it will do not get empathy and support from others individuals and groups around them.
