Penelitian yang berjudul “The Development of Grunge Fashion in Bandung: A Case Study of Purnawarman Community” ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perkembangan mode grunge di Purnawarman dan dampaknya terhadap komunitas. Untuk mendukung analisis tersebut, teori kritis digunakan untuk menjelaskan kemunculan dan perkembangan mode grunge di Purnawarman. Selanjutnya, untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian ini, konsep emansipasi diterapkan untuk mengamati bagaimana perubahan ini mempengaruhi kehidupan masyarakat komunitas Purnawarman. Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif dalam menganalisis data. Data primer dikumpulkan melalui wawancara pribadi dan Focus Group Discussion. Data sekunder diperoleh dari buku, jurnal dan artikel. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada lima jenis mode grunge yang paling banyak ditemukan di Purnawarman. Mereka adalah Grunge T-shirt, Flannel, Clout Goggles, Ripped Jeans dan sepatu Converse All-Star atau Dr. Martens. Kepopuleran mode ini dikarenakan harganya yang murah dan desain yang sederhana. Mode ini juga berfungsi sebagai simbol solidaritas. Selain itu, gaya mode grunge memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap rasa harga diri seseorang. Gaya berpakaian grunge membantu mereka merasa percaya diri dan kukuh. Ditemukan juga bahwa musisi grunge berkontribusi kepada masyarakat tidak hanya melalui musik mereka, tetapi juga oleh gaya hidup mereka, yang mencakup beberapa bentuk aktivitas politik, serta kampanye dan aktivisme untuk mendukung isu-isu yang mereka yakini. Salah satu dari banyak isu yang diperjuangkan komunitas Purnawarman, adalah perlawanan terhadap rezim otoriter Presiden Soeharto yang berkuasa selama 32 tahun, semakin jauhnya emansipatoris demokrasi di Indonesia dan minimnya kebebasan berekspresi.

The research entitled “The Development of Grunge Fashion in Bandung: A Case Study of Purnawarman Community” aims to figure out grunge fashion development in Purnawarman and the impacts it brings on the community. To support the analysis, critical theory is employed to analyse the emergence and development of grunge fashion in Purnawarman. Furthermore, to reach this research goal, the concept of emancipation is applied to observe how this change affects the lives of this community. The researcher uses a qualitative method in analyzing the data. The primary data are collected from personal interviews and Focus Group Discussion. The secondary data are obtained from books, journals and articles. The result of this research shows that there are five types of grunge fashion that are most found in Purnawarman. They are Grunge T-shirts, Flannels, Clout Goggles, Ripped Jeans and Converse All-Star or Dr. Martens shoes. The popularity of these fashions is due to the low prices and simple design. It also serves as a symbol of solidarity. In addition to that, the grunge fashion sense has a significant influence on a person's sense of self-worth. Grunge fashion style helps them feel confident and secure. It also finds that grunge musicians contributed to society not just via their music, but also by their style of life, which included some form of political activity, as well as campaigning and activism to support issues they believed in. One of the many issues the Purnawarman community fought for, is the struggle against the authoritarian regime of President Soeharto who was in power for 32 years, the increasingly far from reality emancipatory democracy in Indonesia and the lack of freedom of expression.
