THE POPULATION STRUCTURE OF Parathelphusa convexa RELATED TO THEIR WATER QUALITY AT RIVER PELUS IN BANYUMAS
Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia)
River Pelus is running from Mount Slamet at Baturaden District to the River Serayu at Kalibagor District. The river located in Banyumas Regency geographic position between 7°12'30"-7°21'31"S and 109°12'31"-109°19'10"E. The altitude of the river between 24-810 m AMSL and has a length of more than 28 km. River Pelus is passing through Baturaden, Kembaran, and Kalibagor District in Banyumas. The surrounding community utilizes it for bamboos, rice fields, settlement, bathing, washing, and toilet activities. These activities can indirectly cause degradation of river water quality and lead to the alteration of its biota community, including freshwater crabs. Freshwater crabs play an important role in the riverine ecosystem. The objectives of the research are to describe the population structure of Parathelphusa convexa at River Pelus, characterize water quality at River Pelus, and analyze the relationship between the population structure of P. convexa and water quality of the river. This research will use a survey method with purposive random sampling techniques at four stations. The biological parameter of the population structure of P. convexa includes species richness, sex ratio, and carapace width. Then, this affects the P. convexa species abundance of fluctuation with their water quality. The parameters of river water quality will take in each station, such as temperature, water current velocity, pH, DO, and BOD. The data of P. convexa and water quality will analyzed by descriptive using Spearman’s rank correlation. The data of P. convexa will be examined by descriptive This study is very useful for predicting the dominant factor affecting crabs abundance in the river from upstream to downstream. A total of 49 individuals of P. convexa were obtained during the field trips. Twenty-nine individuals were found in the upstream and gradually decreased to the downstream areas. The abundance of P. convexa was affected by riverbed substrate in River Pelus. P. convexa was not found in sandy habitats. This phenomenon is related to the role of freshwater crabs as detritivore. P. convexa abundance was also affected by BOD concentration.
