Penelitian ini berfokus pada pengajaran menggunakan materi otentik dari surat kabar The Jakarta Post pada bagian Around the World. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah; (1) untuk mendeskripsikan penerapan materi otentik pada pengajaran sebab-akibat menulis paragraf. (2) untuk mengetahui masalah yang dihadapi oleh siswa, (3) untuk mengetahui tanggapan siswa dan guru terhadap penerapan materi otentik. Metodologi penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif. Fungsinya untuk mendapatkan deskripsi tentang kegiatan, masalah yang dihadapi, dan pendapat tentang penerapan materi otentik dari surat kabar The Jakarta Post. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI SMA N 4 Purwokerto. Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPS 1 SMA N 4 Purwokerto. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan observasi, kuesioner, dan wawancara. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti memilih, dan menyalin data yang terkait dengan tujuan penelitian. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah; (1) materi otentik dari surat kabar The Jakarta Post telah di terapkan dengan beberapa langkah; brainstorming, menebak topik, menjelaskan materi, mendiskusikan teks, menemukan kosa kata, mengekspresikan ide, membimbing menulis berkelompok, menulis individu, memberikan umpan balik, dan mengulas materi. (2) masalah yang dihadapi siswa adalah dalam memahami penerapan bentuk kalimat dan kurangnya pemahaman kosa kata. (3) tanggapan siswa; 88% siswa antusias dalam proses belajar mengajar, dan juga mereka lebih kreatif dalam menulis paragraph sebab-akibat, hal ini dapat di lihat dari hasil angket bahwa 88% siswa dapat mengekspresikan ide-ide mereka dalam paragraph sebab-akibat dengan menggunakan surat kabar The Jakarta Post. Tanggapan guru; materi otentik memberikan pengetahuan baru untuk siswa dan isi dari teks sesuai dengan materi sebab dan akibat. Rekomendasi dari penelitian ini adalah untuk guru-guru Bahasa Inggris yang ingin menerapkan materi otentik sebagai media pengajaran harus menyiapkan materi dengan memilih materi yang sesuai dengan silabus, mengaktifkan latar belakang pengetahuan siswa, dan berdiskusi menggunakan Bahasa Inggris dengan siswa.

The Use of Authentic Materials Found in The Jakarta Post Newspaper at “Around the World” Section for Teaching Cause-And-Effect Paragraph Writing (An Explorative Study on the Implementation of Authentic Materials to the XI Grade Social 1 Students of SMA N 4 Purwokerto in the Academic Year of 2019/2020). This research mainly concerns on teaching using authentic materials found in The Jakarta Post newspaper at Around the World section. The purposes of this research are; (1) to describe the implementation of authentic materials in teaching cause and effect paragraph writing, (2) to find the problems faced by the students, (3) to know the students’ and English teacher’s responses on the implementation of authentic materials. The methodology of this research is qualitative research method. The functions were to get the description about activities, problems, and opinions of using authentic materials found in The Jakarta Post newspaper. The population of this research is the XI grade students of SMA N 4 Purwokerto. The sample of this research is XI Social 1 students of SMA N 4 Purwokerto. The data were conducting by observation, interview, and questionnaire. In analyzing the data, researcher selected, and transcribed the data related to the research objectives. The result of this research are; (1) authentic materials from The Jakarta Post newspaper have been implemented with some steps; brainstorming, guessing topic, explaining materials, discussing texts, finding vocabulary, expressing ideas, guiding group work writing, writing individually, giving feedback, and reviewing materials. (2) problems faced by students is understanding of implementation the tenses and lack of vocabulary (3) the students’ responses; 88 % students were enthusiast in teaching-learning process, and also they are more creative in producing cause and effect paragraph it can be seen from the result of questionnaire that 88% of the students could express their ideas in producing cause and effect paragraph by using authentic materials. English teacher’s responses; authentic materials gave new knowledge for the students and the content of the texts are relevant with materials cause and effect. Recommendation of this research is for English teachers who want to use authentic materials as teaching media are should prepare the authentic materials by selecting the appropriate materials which relevant with syllabus, activate the students’ background knowledge, and discuss the text in target language (English) with the students.
