Latar Belakang: Sebuah tantangan abadi bagi setiap profesi adalah membangun dan menerapkan standar profesional yang baik. Empati sebagai salah satu elemen spesifik profesionalisme dokter merupakan suatu komponen dasar dalam hubungan terapeutik dokter-pasien. Pendidikan kedokteran berperan penting dalam mencetak dokter-dokter yang berempati. Namun, dewasa ini, isu menurunnya empati pada mahasiswa kedokteran selama pendidikan berlangsung menjadi topik perdebatan. Salah satu faktor yang ditengarai berkontribusi terhadap erosi empati pada mahasiswa kedokteran adalah burnout. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui korelasi antara burnout akademik dan empati pada mahasiswa kedokteran preklinik.
Metode: Penelitian observasional analitik dengan pendekatan cross-sectional. Subyek penelitian adalah mahasiswa preklinik Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Jenderal Soedirman Tahun Angkatan 2015-2018. Teknik pengumpulan sampel dilakukan dengan proportional stratified random sampling dengan total sampel 216 mahasiswa. Analisis statistik dilakukan dengan uji korelasi Pearson.
Hasil: Terdapat korelasi negatif bermakna (r = -0,236; p<0,05) antara skor burnout akademik dengan skor empati pada mahasiswa preklinik Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Jenderal Soedirman Purwokerto Tahun Angkatan 2015-2018. Rerata skor empati mahasiswa sebesar 104,33±11,89, sedangkan rerata skor burnout mahasiswa sebesar 45,78±11,70. Kesimpulan: Terdapat hubungan burnout akademik dan empati pada mahasiswa preklinik Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Jenderal Soedirman Purwokerto.

Background: A perennial challenge for every profession is to collectively establish and enforce professional standards. Empathy as a specific element of physician professionalism is considered as main component in physician-patient relationship. Medical education serves a crucial role in order to create empathetic doctor. But, nowadays, issues concerning empathy decline of medical student during medical training are in dispute. One factor that may contribute to the phenomenon is burnout. This study is to examine the correlation between academic burnout and empathy of undergraduate medical students.
Methods: Analytical observational study design with cross-sectional approach. The study subjects were the first to fourth year undergraduate medical students at Faculty of Medicine University of Jenderal Soedirman Purwokerto. Sample were gathered with proportional stratified random sampling, including 216 undergraduate medical students. Statistical analysis was done using Pearson correlation test.
Result: There was a significant negative correlation (r = -0.236; p<0.05) between the score of academic burnout and empathy of the subjects. The means of the empathy score was 104.33±11.89, while the means of the burnout score was 45.78±11.70.
Conclusion: There is a correlation between undergraduate medical students’ academic burnout and empathy at Faculty of Medicine, University of Jenderal Soedirman Purwokerto.
