Penelitian ini berjudul “The Formula of Supernatural Horror Film In Movie The Exorcist By William Friedkin” bertujuan untuk menemukan formula-formula film horor supranatural pada film The Exorcist. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dalam menganalisis data utama. Data utama penelitian ini diambil dari naskah tertulis dan juga visualisasi dari film The Exorcist. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti ini menggunakan teori formula yang dikemukakan oleh John G. Cawelty berhubungan dengan formula film horor supranatural pada karya tersebut. Ada dua tahap dalam menjawab rumusan masalah. Tahapan pertama adalah mengumpukan data dari film dan sumber lainnya yang berhubungan dengan formula film horor supranatural. Tahap kedua adalah meneliti formula film horor supratural pada film tersebut, dengan cara membaginya menjadi tiga aspek, seperti pola tindakan, karakter dan hubungannya, dan latar. Berdasarkan penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan formula film horor supranatural dapat dilihat dari tiga aspek, pola tindakan, karakter dan hubungannya, dan latar. Selanjutnya, aspek pola tindakan menunjukan bagaimana suatu peristiwa terjadi dan berkembang hingga menemukan penyelesaiannya. Aspek karakter dan hubungannya menunjukan hubungan satu karakter dengan karakter lainnya. Selanjutnya, aspek latar menunjukan kapan dan dimana cerita tersebut berlangsung.

This research entitled “The Formula of Supernatural Horror Film in Movie The Exorcist by William Friedkin” is aimed to figure out the formula of supernatural horror Film in The Exorcist. This research uses qualitative method to analyse the main data of the research. The main data of this research are taken from the written transcript and also the visualisation of film The Exorcist. In analysing the data, the researcher uses Formula theory delivered by John G. Cawelty relates with the formula of supernatural horror film in the literary work. There are two steps in answering the research question. The first step is collecting the data from film and other references which relate with the formula of supernatural horror film. The second step is examining the formula of supernatural horror film in the film, by dividing it into three aspects, such as pattern of action, characters and relationships, and setting. Based on this analysis, the researcher figures out the formula of supernatural horror film can be seen from three aspects, such as pattern of action, characters and relationships, and setting. Furthermore, pattern of action aspect shows how an event occurs and develops to find a solution. Characters and relationships show the relationship of one character to other characters. Then, Setting aspects shows when and where the story took place.
