Penelitian ini berjudul “Analisis Ragam Bahasa yang Digunakan dalam Tuturan Peran Aibileen pada Film The Help”. Penelitian ini akan menganalisa ragam bahasa yang dihasilkan oleh peran Aibileen pada film The Help sebagai obyek dalam penelitian dengan menggunakan teori ragam bahasa oleh Martin Joss yang membahas tentang 5 ragam bahasa, yaitu: Beku, Formal, Konsultatif, Kasual dan Intim, kemudian, untuk mendukung analisis ini, teori hubungan sosial juga disajikan untuk digunakan dalam menentukan hubungan antara pemeran utama terhadap pemeran lainnya.

Penelitian deskriptif kualitatif ini menggunakan teknik total sampling dimana terdapat 85 data yang dianalisa. Data penelitian berupa tuturan Aibileen terhadap pemeran lain dari latar belakang pendidikan dan sosial yang berbeda. Dalam pengumpulan data, saya menggunakan film dan transkripnya untuk mendaftar dialog dari Aibileen dengan pemeran lainnya.

Berdasarkan teori ragam bahasa Joos, dapat terlihat bahwa hanya terdapat 4 ragam bahasa yang digunakan oleh Aibileen yaitu, ragam formal (11 tuturan), konsultatif (7 tuturan), kasual (51 tuturan) dan intim (16 tuturan). Selain itu, dari macam ragam bahasa tersebut, terdapat ragam yang sering digunakan oleh Aibileen, yaitu ragam kasual. Saya tidak menemukan ragam beku dalam penelitian ini dikarenakan tidak ada setting atau kondisi yang memungkinkan munculnya ragam bahasa tersebut.

This research is entitled “An analysis of speech style used on the utterances of Aibileen’s character in the The Help movie”. The research will analyze the speech styles produced by Aibileen’s character in the The Help movie as the object of the research by using speech style theory by Martin Joos which discusses about five speech styles, namely : Frozen, Formal, Consultative, Casual, and Intimate, then, to support the analysis, the theory of social distance is also presented to be used in deciding the distance of the main character between the other characters.

The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research applied total sampling in which is there were 85 data to analyze. The data research is Aibileen’s utterances between the other characters from different social and educational background. To collect the data, I use the movie and its script to listing the Aibileen’s dialog with the other character.
Based on Joos theory of speech style, it can be seen that there are only 4 speech styles which is used by the Aibileen, they are formal style (11 utterances), consultative style (7 utterances) casual style (51 utterances) and intimate style (16 utterances). Moreover, from those kinds of speech styles, there is a style which is often used by Aibileen, it is casual style. I found no frozen style in this research for the reason that there is no possible setting or condition that may show this style.
