Hubungan antara Penggunaan Emoji pada Aplikasi WhatsApp dengan Keintiman Hubungan Romantis Mahasiswa Ilmu Komunikasi FISIP Unsoed

Aplikasi WhatsApp merupakan salah satu aplikasi teknologi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh masyarakat urban untuk saling terhubung. Utamanya, WhatsApp digunakan dalam proses komunikasi antar pribadi meskipun dapat juga digunakan sebagai sarana komunikasi kelompok. Salah satu manfaat dari WhatsApp dapat dilihat pada konteks hubungan romantis yang dijalani oleh mahasiswa sebagai kaum dewasa muda (young adult). Pilihan ini dilakukan karena WhatsApp merupakan aplikasi yang tidak hanya berbasis teks, namun juga memiliki fitur lain seperti WhatsApp call, pertukaran file dan emoji. Emoji menjadi salah satu fitur dalam aplikasi WhatsApp yang dapat menggambarkan perasaan penggunanya dalam bentuk grafis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah terdapat hubungan antara penggunaan emoji pada aplikasi WhatsApp dengan keintiman hubungan romantis mahasiswa Ilmu Komunikasi FISIP Unsoed. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan koefisien korelasi sebesar 0,649 dan hasil uji t 7,360 > 1,99. Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan yang cukup berarti dan signifikan antar variabel dalam penelitian ini.

Nowadays, urban people use WhatsApp as one of communication technology applications to stay connected with each other. WhatsApp is mostly used in interpersonal communication context but this application is also used for group communication. The use of WhatsApp can also be seen in romantic relationships among college students as young adults. WhatsApp is chosen because it is not only a text-based application, but it is also complete with many features that can be used by the users like WhatsApp call, file transfer and emoji. Emoji is one of the features that can express the users’ feelings in graphical figures. This study is aimed to find out whether there is a correlation between the uses of emoji in WhatsApp and romantic relationships intimacy of the students in Communication major in FISIP UNSOED. Social Information Processing Theory is the theory used in this study. As a quantitative descriptive study, there were 82 samples taken out with simple random sampling technique. The result of this study showed that the correlation coefficient was at the level of 0.649 and t-test result which wad 7.360 > 1.99. This result revealed there is a quite meaningful significant correlation between variables.
