Jurnal ini membahas mengenai metode soft power diplomacy yang diambil oleh pemerintahan Amerika dibawah kepemimpinan Barack Obama untuk memperbaiki citra global mereka setelah mengalami penurunan drastis selama pemerintahan George W. Bush. Kebijakan agresif dan unilateralistik Amerika untuk melawan terorisme selama era tersebut adalah faktor utama yang menyebabkan penurunan tersebut.

Menyadari hal tersebut, Obama memutuskan untuk mengambil kebijakan baru; mengadopsi kebijakan yang lebih bersahabat dan berbasis soft power diplomacy. Dan salah satu perwujudan kebijakan tersebut adalah penggunaan olahraga bola basket sebagai instrumen diplomasi, juga dikenal dengan istilah basketball diplomacy. Olahraga bola basket adalah pilihan yang tepat karena merupakan olahraga khas Amerika yang populer di dunia, dan juga mengajarkan nilai-nilai penting Amerika, seperti kerjasama, rasa hormat, kebersamaan, dan lainnya. Pemerintah menjalankan kebijakan ini melalui program yang dilaksanakan SportsUnited, dan program-program ini dikelompokkan dalam tiga kategori utama: Sports Envoy, Sports Visitor, dan Sports Grant. Beberapa contoh program ini akan dijelaskan di dalam jurnal.

Kelebihan soft power diplomacy, atau khususnya basketball diplomacy, adalah bahwa diplomasi ini bisa dilakukan oleh aktor manapun; tidak hanya negara, melainkan juga organisasi dan bahkan individu. Jurnal ini akan melihat contoh pelaksanaan basketball diplomacy oleh NBA dan Dennis Rodman. Dan pada bagian akhir, kita akan melihat dan memutuskan apakah basketball diplomacy kebijakan yang efektif dan apakah Amerika harus terus menjalankannya.

This journal discusses about the method of soft power diplomacy that the American government under the presidency of Barack Obama taken to repair the country’s global image after it suffered a great decline during the George W. Bush’s presidency. America’s aggressive and unilateralistic policy to combat terrorism during Bush’s era is the main factor that caused the decline.
Realizing that, Obama decided to go on a whole new direction; by adopting a friendlier, soft power diplomacy-based policy. And one of the embodiments of that policy is through the usage of basketball as an instrument of diplomacy, also known as basketball diplomacy. Basketball is a great choice because it is a signature American sport that is popular globally. It also teaches some quitessential American values, such as teamwork, respect, togetherness, and many more. The government carries out this policy through the programs run by SportsUnited, where the program is classified under three main categories: Sports Envoy, Sports Visitor, and Sports Grant. Several examples of this program will be explained in the journal.
A unique quality of soft power diplomacy in general, and basketball diplomacy more spesificially, is that it can be done by any actors; not only countries, but can also be run by organizations, and even individuals. This journal will look at the examples of it, which are the basketball diplomacy programs run by the NBA and Dennis Rodman. And at the end, we will take a look and decide is basketball diplomacy an effective policy and should America continue to pursue it.
