Penelitian yang berjudul “Cultural Preservation by Afghan Portrayed in Marciano’s The End of Manners” bertujuan untuk menemukan upaya-upaya yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat Afghanistan, khususnya masyarakat pedalaman, dalam mempertahankan budayanya ditengah peperangan dan dominasi orang Barat. Dalam penelitian ini, pendekatan dan teori Sosiologi digunakan untuk meneliti novel The End of Manners. Kemudian, analisis tersebut dijabarkan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif.
Terdapat beberapa langkah dalam meneliti novel ini. Langkah pertama yaitu, membaca novel The End of Manner suntuk memahami novel tersebut. Langkah kedua yaitu mengidentifikasi teks yang berisi tentang faktor-faktor pemertahanan budaya untuk selanjutnya dijadikan kumpulan data. Langkah ketiga yaitu menjelaskan upaya-upaya yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat Afghanistan untuk mempertahankan budayanya yang dilakukan yang digambarkan didalam novel The End of Manners berdasarkan pada terori perubahan budaya oleh Soerjono Soekanto. Langkah terkahir yaitu penulis meringkas hasil penelitian yang dilakukan pada novel The End of Manners.
Berdasarkan analisis yang, penulis menemukan bahwa ada tiga upaya yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat Afghanistan untuk mempertahankan budayanya. Upaya yang pertama adalah dengan menerapkan lingkungan berbasis tradisi. Dalam hal ini, masyarakat Afghanistan menerapkan aturan berbusana tradisional dan menerapkan sistem sosial yang tradisional. Upaya yang kedua adalah menerapkan nilai-nilai ideologi. Dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, masyarakat Afghanistan memberlakukan norma-norma sosial dan sistem kepercayaan. Upaya yang ketiga adalah menanamkan prejudis terhadap hal-hal baru yang ditujukan untuk orang baru dan pemikiran baru.

The research entitled “Cultural Preservation by Afghan portrayed in Marciano’s The End of Manners” is purposed to find out the efforts which are done by Afghan especially the people in the rural area in preserving the cultures in the war condition and under Western domination. This research uses Sociological approach and theories to analyze The End of Manners novel. Furthermore, the analysis is arranged using descriptive qualitative method.
There are several steps in analyzing The End of Manners novel. The first step, the researcher reads the novel to comprehend the content of the novel. The second step, the researcher identifies text which contains the information about the factors of cultural preservation to be collected as the data collection. The third step, the researcher analyzes the efforts of Afghan to preserve the culture based on The End of Manners novel according Soerjono Soekanto’s theory. The last step is summarizing, the researcher summarizes of all the result of analyze which is done on The End of Manners novel.
As the result of the analysis, the researcher finds that there are three efforts that are conducted by Afghans to preserve the culture. The first effort is implementing the traditional society. In this case, Afghans implement the rule of traditional costume and implement the traditional social system. Second effort is implementing the values of ideology. In the daily life, Afghans implement the social norms and the belief system. The third effort is prejudicing towards new things which are addressed to the new people and new thought.
