Penelitian berjudul “Hysteria of Kelly as Depicted in Sydney Sheldon’s ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?” bertujuan untuk menganalisa sebab dan akibat-akibat dari histeria Kelly terhadap perilakunya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dalam menganalisa datanya. Data utama dalam penelitian ini adalah sebuah novel karya Sydney Sheldon berjudul ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?. Data utama dianalisa dengan menggunakan pendekatan psikologi yang berisi teori Psikoanalisa olehSigmund Freud. Dalam penelitian ini, teori psikoanalisa digunakan untuk mendukung dua penelitian yaitu histeria dan mekanisme pertahanan. Teori ini digunakan untuk menganalisa sebab dan akibat histeria Kelly bentuk dari mekanisme pertahanan terhadap traumanya.
Ada beberapa tahapan dalam menganalisa untuk menjawab rumusan-rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini. Pertama, setelah data terkumpul, peneliti mereduksi data yang tidak berhubungan dengan tokoh Kelly. Kedua, peneliti mengklasifikasi data yang termasuk unsur instrinsik novel yang berhubungan dengan tokoh Kelly. Kemudian, peneliti mengklasifikasi bukti-bukti mana yang temasuk penyebab dan mana yang termasuk akibat dari histeria Kelly. Ketiga, peneliti menguji data dengan menggunakan teori psikoanalisa untuk menganalisa sebab-sebab dan akibat-akibat histeria Kelly serta penekanan dan pemisahan dirinya sebagai wujud mekanisme pertahanannya yang mempengaruhi perubahan perilakunya. Terakhir, penulis menyimpulkan analisa tersebut.
Hasil dari analisa ini, peneliti menemukan bahwa histeria Kelly disebabkan karena dia menjadi korban pasif dari pelecehan seksual dan karenapenekanannya terhadap ingatan traumatisnya tentang pelecehan seksual pada masa kanak-kanaknya. Kemudian, histeria Kelly diekspresikan sebagai rasa takutnya terhadap beberapa hal yang mengindikasikan bahwa dia mengalami beberapa perubahan perilaku karena penekanan trauma seksualnya. Sehingga, beberapa perubahan perilaku Kelly kemudian menjadi akibat-akibat dari histerianya. Beberapa perubahan perilaku tersebut yaitu: Pemisahan diri Kelly, Kelly menjadi takut dengan gelap secara berlanjut, Kelly takut dengan pria asing, serta Kelly takut dengan hubungan seksual sampai masa dewasanya.

This research entitled “Hysteria of Kelly as Depicted in Sydney Sheldon’s ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?” is purposed to analyze the cause and the effects of Kelly’s hysteria toward her behaviour. This research used qualitative method in analysing the data. The main data of this research is a novel by Sydney Sheldon entitled ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?. The main data are analyzed by using psychological approach which is contained of psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud. In this research, the theory is divided into two investigations, Hysteria and Defence Mechanism. The theory is used to analyze the cause and the effect of Kelly’s hysteria and her form of her defence mechanism to her trauma.
There were some steps in analysing this research to answer the research questions. First, after data were collected, the researcher reduced the data which are not related with Kelly’s character. Second, the researcher classified the data which were the intrinsic element of the novel related Kelly’s character. Then, the researcher classified the evidences which is the cause and which are included the effects of Kelly’s hysteria. Third, the researcher examined the data by using  psychoanalysis theory to analyze the Kelly’s hysteria causes and effects along withher repression and her dissociation as her defence mechanisms which influenced her behaviour changing. Last, the researcher concluded the analysis.
The result of the analysis, the researcher founds that Kelly’s hysteria are caused by her becoming into a passive victim of sexual abuse and her repression of her traumatic memory of her sexual abused at her childhood. Then, Kelly’s hysteria be expressed as her fears of several things which in indicates that she had some changess of her behaviour because of her repressed sexual trauma. Hence, some of Kelly’s behaviour changes then become the effects of her hysteria. Some of Kelly’s behaviour changes are: Kelly’s dissociation, Kelly’s continual fears with a dark, fears with a stranger man, and fears with sexual intercourse until her adulthood.
