POTENTIAL OF CHEMOLITOTROPHIC BACTERIA FROM GOLD MINING AREA TO SULFUR OXIDATION
Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia)
Gold in nature is covered by rocks which contain sulfide minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and others sulfide minerals. Conventional minning uses the toxic chemical such as cyanide to separate gold from the sulfide mineral. Chemolitotrophic bacteria have the ability to oxidation of sulfur compounds. This capability can be used in the process of releasing gold from carrier rocks which contain sulfide minerals. The aim of this research was to explore the potential of chemolitotrophic bacteria from gold mining areas for sulfur oxidation and to identification that bacteria. The methode for this research was exploration the potential of bacteria in sulfur oxidation and describe the variety of bacteria that is isolated from gold mining areas by 16s rRNA identification. The result shown that there was six isolates from isolation on Starkey solid medium, i.e. Bl-1 isolate similar with Paenibacillus sp. G1, Bl-2 isolate similar with Enterobacter ludwigii strain E8-13 and isolate Bl-3 has similarity with uncultured Burkholderia sp. Bl-4 isolate (uncultured bacterium clone N4.5). Bl-5 isolate similar with Bacillus subtilis strain CICC 10023 and Bacterium enrichment culture clone 02 has similarity with isolate Bl-6. Treatment with Bl-3 isolate showed the increase of sulfate compound amount 8.04% at 649.55 ppm in the medium and 2.67 % with mix culture.
